Adopting an animal from Thailand

Sadly, our centre is always operating at full capacity. This means we urgently need to find people who are willing to adopt one of our beautiful dogs or cats. We have over 30 dogs and 60 cats of different sizes and personalities, both puppies/kittens and adults. All show tremendous love for humans and are in great need of your time and affection.

If you want to take an animal home we can help with the whole process, whether your home is here in Thailand or in another country. Please scroll down for information on procedure and costs as well as the regulations applicable to your country. For adoptions abroad we will ensure the animal is fully vaccinated, has the necessary blood tests and fulfills the quarantine rules.

SUCCESS STORIES

We have been able to find homes for hundreds and hundreds of rescued animals over the years.

They have been adopted to all over the world from Thailand to France to UK to USA and are now living happier lives with their adopted families, a much different life to the suffering they were subjected to, before they were rehomed .

Adoption requirements vary by country. Europe, Canada and the USA are quite straight forward. If your country or region is not featured below, please email [email protected] and we will investigate the regulations applicable to you.

NOTE: all but a few of our adoptable dogs have already been rabies titre tested in preparation for travel to the EU, they have their certificates and are ready to go!

Europe including The UK and Ireland:

  • The animal requires micro-chipping and a blood test, which is sent to a laboratory in the UK for rabies analysis. The animal can fly 3 months after the blood test is confirmed rabies negative. Cost: 4,100 THB which needs to be paid in advance & is non-refundable.
  • The animal can travel as cargo (non-accompanied) OR as accompanied baggage, which is considerably cheaper. This does depend on the airline. A number of flight volunteers have helped by taking animals as “accompanied baggage”. See below for additional details regarding travel as accompanied baggage.
  • Approved IATA flight cage & water feeder: 1000 THB approx (for cat) – 5,000 THB approx (for dog). The price of the cage depends on the size of the animal.
  • No quarantine. (UK/Ireland as of January 2012)

NOTE: Lanta Animal Welfare handles all the logistics surrounding these matters, the adopter does not have to do anything regarding logistics.

North America:

  • Micro-chipping (500 THB). No blood test required.
  • The animal can travel as cargo (non-accompanied) OR as accompanied baggage, which is considerably cheaper. This does depend on the airline. A number of flight volunteers have helped by taking animals as accompanied baggage.
  • Approved IATA flight cage & water feeder: 1000 THB approx (for cat) – 5,000 THB approx (for dog). The price of the cage depends on the size of the animal.
  • No quarantine period.

Australia/New Zealand:

Australia and New Zealand are both time consuming and expensive to re-home animals to, which is unfortunate. The situation is not impossible though. The options are:

  1. The animals have a 6 month in Europe followed by a one month quarantine period in Australia or New Zealand.
  2. Or (preferred but more expensive), the animal is sent to the United States where no quarantine is required and then sent to Australia/New Zealand.

Below is an outline of basic costs and estimates associated with overseas adoption.
These costs DO NOT include the flight cost for the animal, as this varies a lot depending on destination, date and whether the animal is flying with a flight volunteer or going by cargo.

We want to emphasise that we do not make money on adoptions; we are simply happy to get homeless animals to good forever homes – this just covers our costs.

The first payment should be made at the same time as the adoption agreement is signed and must include the extra costs for non-LAW animals if applicable (see below).

All costs are in THB (Thai Baht).  Please check currency conversion at www.xe.com

First deposit

For EU countries 16,000 THB.

FOR ANIMALS NOT AT LAW ALREADY the extra costs are:
Sterilisation – 500 THB
Boarding/quarantine usually minimum 4 months to the EU; Cats 3000 TBH/month, Dogs 4000THB/month.

These costs will be added to the first payment)

Second deposit

Between 3,000 - 11,000 TBH
This does NOT include the price of the flight ticket from Thailand to the destination country. For EU flights this is usually between 300-700 Euros, but can be much cheaper with certain airlines.

Note: The second payment amount will depend on the route, flight and boarding dates, airline and the size of the animal – please speak to us to discuss individual cases.

Flight ticket costs for airline

The price for flight tickets for animals varies greatly between airlines, depending on the size and weight of the animal, and the route taken.
– On average, the airline cost for a flight to the EU is between 300-600 Euros *
– On average, the airline cost for a flight to Canada / the USA is between $200-500 USD*
– For UK adoptions, animals have to fly to mainland Europe, (usually Amsterdam, please ask for details), then onto the UK by ferry. On average, the airline cost for a flight to Amsterdam, accommodation in Amsterdam, then onward ferry transport to the UK is between £350-500 GBP*

Note: This money goes to the airline, not to LAW

*Costs for flights can vary immensely depending on size of animal/airline- This is only a rough estimate
