Koh Lanta

The district, located approximately 70 km from Krabi Town, consists of two major islands, the larger, more populated Ko Lanta Yai (Commonly known as simply Ko Lanta) and the smaller Ko Lanta Noi, as well as several minor islands. The island (Ko Lanta Yai) has 9 attractive white sandy beaches, splendid scenery; coastlines have more than 70 small islands and plenty with forest, coral reefs and underwater life. The geography of the island is typically mangroves; coral rimmed beaches; and rugged tree covered hills. A popular tourist destination, the islands are known for their long, sandy beaches and scuba diving.

Krabi and Ko Lanta are a melting pot of Buddhists, Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even sea gypsies. The majority of the population in the rural areas is Muslim. The area however, does not suffer from any religious tension and the folk live in peace and harmony. With this kind of mixture, Ko Lanta is always celebrating something, be it part of Thai Buddhist, Thai-Chinese or Thai-Islamic tradition.

134 km² of the district belong to the Ko Lanta National Park, which was established in 1990 as the 62nd national park of Thailand (Wikipedia).

  1. hi junie

    i’m thinking hard!
If people want to take out a monthly standing order/direct debit I need a bank account number and address etc where the money can be paid into please.

Also the name of the charity; is it Lanta Animal Welfare?

I’m thinking of ‘please adopt a dog or cat’ I think my friends will help.
I could provide them with a picture and their history.
Sophie could do all the cats at the centre and T4L and Nicola or Jenna could do the dogs.
I know you already have some on a website somewhere, but I haven’t seen it yet. Will check it out when I get home tomorrow.
    cheers Mx

  2. Update on Harry; the boisterous 3-legged dog.

    25/8/10
Harry has now been adopted by Ae at Klama Klume Beach Bar. Either Junie, Sophie or I have visited him every day since his placement 10 days ago and he is so very happy.
The customers all love him (how couldn’t they?). He is free to run on the beach, but never goes far and there are no nasty roads to knock him down.
A female sandy dog visits him daily from a nearby bar; so go go go Harry!
